July's Open Mic & Slam Night

This month the open mic and poetry slam competition event at The HOFF was electric with creative inspiration and delivery! The open mic showed off a myriad of different works, kicking off the evening in literal song! Though seemingly a high bar to follow, our creative minds took to the stage with retellings of poetry that spotlit mental wellness, discovery of the Earth herself, and a constellation of other brilliant constructs. The first portion of this monthly event also proves itself to be ever evolving as we continue to see vastly different types of art showcased each time.

Mindy McVay, hostess and heckler, was also shining on stage that evening, sharing with the audience a few pieces from her upcoming poetry books, undoubtedly wetting their appetite for the coming release. This writer’s personal favorite among them, a heated back and forth between author and muse during times of writer’s block.

Finally, the slam competition was in peak performance! Including several previous winners from months before, the entire competition was too close to call from rounds 1-4! Our last round 3 competitors ended with a difference of 1.2 points overall! Whitney Decker, the winner for the second month in a row will be featured in both August and September's newsletter, an unprecedented occasion, indeed!

What shall we see next month? Will a veteran slam member of our event come in and dethrone our reigning champion? Will we see a continued streak? All this author knows is that this demands for call to all authors, poets, and slam competitors! Come in August and arm yourselves with your best pieces! The precedent has been set, now is the time to meet it! I believe in all of you! I can’t wait to see you next month!
