June's Open Mic Night and Slam Poetry Competition Recap!

Hellooo Hannah! We are so glad to have found you!

June brought beautiful flowers to the Midnight Garden and our hostess, Mindy McVay, was back at the HOFF for our monthly Open Mic and Slam Poetry Competition Night. Iszie Robinson of Pink Blazer Co charmed the crowd in May while Mindy

Friendly Heckling = Love

took the month off due to a severe case of toxicodendron dermatitis after contact with Poison Oak in her backyard.

June saw her return to the mic to encourage the local writing community to share their art. She was welcomed by some friendly heckling, and surprised to find that a volunteer judge had gone missing by the third round of the slam competition, leaving her wandering around the farm yodeling for our Judge Hanna.

Tiffany, one of the waitresses of the Hometown Olathe Family Farm graciously stepped in to pick up the mantle of fifth judge. Fitting into her role with confidence and sass, she called out other judges in the room for their low ratings. Mindy, provided with any excuse to heckle a guest, brought Tiffany’s concerns to the room to ensure that all of the judges could indeed count to ten. The room erupted into boos and raucous laughter at the gall of her comment and the volley of heckling from the judges when she reminded the audience and judges that they could indeed heckle her back. A good time was had by all and we were finally able to select our winner, Whitney Decker of Cleveland, Mo in Cass County. Check back next month to read Whitney’s poetry spotlight.

After posting a reel of Mindy’s fruitless search for Hannah on facebook. We found her online and were able to call off the search party. Her babysitter had called her home and she apologized for having to take off before the end of the competition. We rejected her apology and applauded her for her fierce loyalty and her motherly love for her child. We genuinely hope she will return for another open mic night and did not take our online reel joking about her missing, personally.

There is always something going on at the Hometown Olathe Family Farm and formally invite our readers to come enjoy an evening of art, laughter, and a good time. Drinks and delicious new menu items are available for purchase.
