Watch us GROW: First Year Sleep, Second Year Creep!

September 01, 20267 min read

With one year under our belt, the partners of Midnight Garden Publishing House LLC, Silver Lining Lotus LLC, and Writers in Residence sat down to discuss our vision for the next year. We had a round of back pats for growing our businesses as well as the Kansas City Communities inside of our Writers in Residence writing groups. This year we are doubling down. What does that mean for our Writers in Residence and Gardeners? It means this year we kick down the artistic silos found around the metro. How, you ask?

We helped the Writers in Residence group get established in our new Modern Literary Salon Online Community at the end of our first year and have been inviting our Gardeners and Writers in Residence to make it a home where all of the different groups around the metro can meet up, talk writing and books, and in general have a collaborative space where they can body double in the online writing desk channel or hang out in their own genre channel. We have held space for a place to share your book release and literary events. As well as keep up to date on where we are popping up next, and build this amazing community.

Brand for The Empower network, a non-profit that supports entrepreneurs with disabilities and chronic illness

  • The Empower Network Monthly Writers Group Meeting:

Location: Online (M.L.S.)

Date and time TBD

This Group’s Mood:

A home for the Empower Network’s nonprofit writing group, helping to support their chronic illness and disabled entrepreneurs, as well as the friends and family that support them. This is an accessibility friendly group. Filled with amazing writers and entrepreneurs whose needs are considered these writing services are tailored to those who are finding their own way to the desk to show up and create with Writers in Residence.

Silver Lining Lotus alongside Midnight Garden Publishing grew to the point that we are excited to announce that we have even more Editorial Services and 5 new editors to make sure our clients and community are supported by talented experienced editors! We are so excited to be leveling up the capacity of care we can bring and are building a bigger editorial table to work with our Kc Metro Writers.

Writers in Residence has been consistently showing up to hold space for writers to have a place to come, work, create, and grow this brilliant community. A need for more accessibility to more Editors has been suggested and we at Midnight Garden Publishing House hear you. We have been wracking our brains on how to pay our wonderful editors to show up to the desk with our Writers in Residence writing group. We have set up a way for people to donate to the Writers in Residence Not for Profit fund to help secure necessary editors for this group. If you would like to donate to this fund please scan this QR Code. Suggested minimum donations are $5. With these donations, we will be able to provide more education, direct editorial staffing at writers groups, and to save towards a future scholarship to help a local Kansas City writer towards their dream of publishing their manuscript.

Writers in Residence is now popping up in the Metro throughout the month. Check out all the Residents they are currently hosting from below.

Every Month Free In-Person Writers groups and events:

  • Second Sundays

Writers in Residence’s writing group 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm:

https://www.facebook.com/share/185s1GCGuT/

Location:

The Airport Hotel Marriott inside the KC Tap & Table Hotel bar and restaurant.

This Group’s Mood:

Sit down in a swanky hotel lobby bar and restaurant, giant windows give you a glimpse of the bustling airport past a large pond. The outside balcony patio offers a great breeze and the sounds of both nature and the luxury of a great cocktail. A delectable menu of options are available for purchase. Currently, this is our smallest writing group. The writers here write a little of everything, business entrepreneurs working on their marketing copy-writing, books for marketing, magazine articles, as well as a fictional novelist. This location has casual laid back conversations and the sounds of quiet clicking keyboards. Light Music, quit bar TVs and lush furniture. Feel free to find a space among the lounge chairs, the balcony patio, or center yourself in the scene at this amazing long table and get to know your writing community. Ask all your questions, and receive friendly advice! This would be an excellent place for people writing fictional, business fiction or espionage stories.

Bring your art, share your heart, and get ready for a few laughs. Here you'll find a fun time and experience our community’s amazing talents! Try your hand at heckling the hostess with the mostest, (if the mostest is sass anyway).

Winners of the Slam Poetry:

Monthly winners of the Slam Poetry competition will win a free drink ticket courtesy of the HOFF, One of their poems will be highlighted in a future monthly newsletter, and will win an opportunity to pitch their manuscript to Mindy McVay, Founder / CEO and owner of Midnight Garden Publishing House.

  • Fourth Mondays

Writers in Residence’s writing group 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

https://www.facebook.com/share/19awdTBEmp/

Location:

Afterword Tavern & Shelves

3105 Gillham Rd, Kansas City, MO 64109

This Group’s Mood:

Poetry is king at this writers group, but don’t count out any genre here. This is an established community of Afterword Tavern fans and friends. Most of the writers here are drawn to this writing group to work on art before the Open Mic that follows it at 7:00pm. Sign up opens at 6:30pm. This community’s dazzling Hostess Christi Clemons Hoffman captures the audience's attention and keeps them informed, engaged, and in a safe level of questionable behavior.

  • Fourth Fridays

Writers in Residence’s writing group 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

https://www.facebook.com/share/195Ns2xSEn/

Location:

The Central Resource Library

9875 W 87th St, Overland Park, KS 66212

Optional Open Mic to follow:

Bear Necessities Coffee and Bar

9609 W 87th St, Overland Park, KS 66212

This Groups Mood:

This Group is a mix of poets and novelists. Until the last two months it has been hosted by the InterUrban ArtHouse, but due to calendar conflicting issues we will be hosting this next month at the Central Resource Library from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm with an optional open mic to follow at Bear Necessities Coffee and Bar! We will continue to be at this location until the gracious and beautiful InterUrban ArtHouse is available again to welcome us back to their inspiring location surrounded by local art.
