The Three Contestants Of The Slam Poetry Event Sit With The Host All Smiling

September Slam and Sarcasm

September Slam and Open Mic night was sardonic and sassy. Stepping in for Mindy, I hosted our event this month with all the excitement you’d find in a certain sarcastic animated brunette from the 90s when MTV still existed. We visited Kansas City Bier Co. this month and enjoyed some wonderful fall food and fun with a competitive trio who put forth their very best to sway the judges in their favor! Returning competitors Jennifer Winter and Mindy McVay brought the proverbial “heat”, along with a new voice Jennifer Campbell. With the enthusiastic energy of a sloth, I nicknamed each of them as “Not Jennifer”, “Linda”, and “Not Jessica”. In return, Mindy ensured I got as good as I gave and entitled me as “Not Mindy”. From beginning to end, the heckling wit was game on.

The Gleeful Group!

Our Open Mic night was electric with selections that reflected the entire emotional spectrum! Protests of anger fiery enough to cause hair to stand on end, forlorn loss of love so relatable it seemed visceral in the bones of those that heard it, and self acceptance which only comes with the journey of life lived were only a few of the selections that graced our presence that evening. Despite a smaller than usual audience, the room was alive with talent and passion, delighting the audience and staff that were lucky enough to encounter it.

The slam competition proved wrought with anticipation. Jennifer Winter accepted the crown once again, and won by a tiny sliver of only .1 point! Despite such tight competition all contestants delighted in their opponents performances, humbly reassuring each other they were certain the other had done the best that round. It is always truly heartwarming to see such appreciation of art itself in this recurring event every month.

From the beer cheese and pretzels to the teasing taunts to the loving laughter, this month was truly spectacular. Despite our lovely leader having to defer hosting duties to yours truly. Never fear, dear friends, our graceful gorgeous host will resume her post this month to delight our audience with renewed vigor! Be sure to keep an eye out on all our socials where we’ll let you know our visiting location while we search for a new permanent home! I can’t wait to see you there!
